A Club for All the Family  West Oxfordshire Sailing Club

Please register above.

The WOSC Sailing School training course programme for 2021 is subject to change in line with Government and RYA advice regarding covid-19 precautions and guidance.

Please refer to covid-19 updates on the website homepage.

at the bottom of this page it explains what we normally deliver, but we can't do this because of covid-19 restrictions... so here is plan B:

1. Pre-season briefing for adults and juniors on 14:00 on Sat 24th April has been cancelled.

If you have any questions contact training@wosc.org.

2. Saturday training

We will be running some Covid-19 compliant sessions on Saturdays in May and June for Juniors only. These are necessarily restricted by numbers as we have to operate in bubbles and use single-handed boats. We’ll try and run at least one youth stage 1 course in May, which will be suitable for anyone new to sailing (aged 8 to 16). We may also have some one-off ‘refresher’ afternoons to get kids back on the water. Hopefully, after June we’ll be able to run our open sessions, but we won’t know until later in the year if we’ve got more flexibility on numbers, so look for an update mid-June-ish.

Process: If you are interested in taking part in any junior training in May and June please register your interest and availability now on the booking form on the website. You will need to log on to the website, go to calendar date March 20th and complete the form. The form will close on March 20th 7pm and I’ll be in touch with you before mid-April if the courses we can offer are suitable for your child(ren).

3. Junior Sailing Week

This is planned for the week of 26-30th July. Details of the booking procedure will be circulated probably in about mid-June when we know what Covid-19 restrictions we are working under with booking at the end of June. Please don’t ask me about junior sailing week before this as I won’t be able to tell you more than I know now. We don’t know if camping will be possible either for JSW, so please don’t enquire about this yet either. All in good time…fingers crossed.

4. Adult RYA training Level 1 and 2.

i) The first course is Sat 8/9th May (Level 1) and 15/16th May (Level 2). You will need to attend all four days, and each day is 9.30 until 5.00pm. You will learn the basics of sailing and the course is suitable for beginners or those returning to sailing after a gap. You need to be at least 16 years old or 14 years if an adult is doing the course with you. Applications from WOSC members will be prioritised. There is an admin charge of £50 which covers both courses.

Booking for WOSC members is through the WOSC website calendar (date 8th May) and will open 29th March for booking. You will need to be logged on to book. There will be a minimum of six and a maximum of eight places on this course and a waiting list will operate. The boats will be single handed (Toppers, Lasers, Hartley) and we’ll need to make sure that we have suitable boats available for the applicants, so booking is subject to confirmation of this (you’ll need to give your weight and height when booking).

Any spare spaces might be offered to non-members who will need to join as temporary members - non-members should contact training@wosc.org and will be added to a waiting list and contacted if places are available.

ii) The second course is on 17th/18th July and 24/25th July. See above. However, if double handed boats are allowed by then, we might have an extra place and Wayfarers to play in.

iii) The final course is on 11/12th September and 18/19th September, again, details are as above but subject to changing Covid-19 restrictions.

5. Powerboat 2 courses

We’re training some new Powerboat Instructors in May and details of PB2 courses will be released in due course and communicated to members through the usual channels. If you do PB2 through WOSC, you will be expected to help with the racing on Sundays as part of the race team.

That’s it! Happy Sailing and Powerboating.

Also, remember to check back here, for updates on training.

Sailing School Courses

1. Weekend RYA Sailing School Level 1 and 2 Course

Open to WOSC members and external candidates +16 years

The aim of this course is to teach a beginner to sail over two consecutive weekends achieving Level 1 and Level 2 RYA qualifications.

Times will be 9.30am to 5pm each day. There is a maximum of 9 students per course.

This course is recommended for those over 16 years of age, though the minimum age is 14 years, for example, if taken with a parent. All young people under 16 must be accompanied by their parent/guardian at all times.

All students will need to sign in at each session.

Course content

Level 1 - On this course, we start with the assumption that you have never been in a sailing boat before and by the end, you will be able to sail in light winds with an Instructor in the boat.

Level 2 - By the end of this course, you will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing, in light winds, without an Instructor on board.

You will receive four full days of instruction. Both the syllabus elements and the duration of training contribute to certification.

The course is conducted mainly in Wayfarers, but there may be opportunities to sail in other boats depending on progress and weather conditions. The course is led by a Senior Instructor and the ratio of instructors:participants is normally 1:3 but may be up to 1:6.

Not a WOSC member? Start sailing temporary membership: limited availability

If you want to try sailing, but not sure it's for you, then you can opt for temporary membership. This amazing offer gives you access to the club facilities until the following March, so that you can use club boats to further practice your sailing and even race! Once your temporary membership expires, you can apply for full club membership if places are available.

To help you get started, you'll need to take the RYA Level 1 and Level 2 course. Applications for temporary membership are taken on a first come first served basis basis so to check availability please contact the training secretary: training@wosc.org.uk.

The cost of temporary membership is £250 in total. This includes the RYA Level 1 and 2 course administration fee of £50 so there is no extra cost to taking the course and if you decide to join the club, your joining fee of £35 is also waived.

Important note: You will be expected to comply with the conditions of membership which includes club duties a couple of times a year (see Membership pages for more details).

WOSC members

Booking is on a first come first served basis booked via the events calendar on the website.

This course attracts a £50 administration fee to cover expenses (fuel, certificates, biscuits).

On successful completion of the course, all qualifying candidates will receive RYA Level 1 and Level 2 certificates along with a logbook and 'Start Sailing' guide.

All courses must be paid for in full at the time of booking. WOSC reserves the right to cancel any course or part thereof when conditions warrant, due to low take-up or adverse weather conditions. On the rare occasion that this is necessary, an alternative course will be offered or a full refund provided. No additional liability for compensation or expenses will be accepted.

Places which had been confirmed but which are cancelled by an applicant in writing or by e-mail to training@wosc.org.uk and received at the centre no less than 4 weeks prior to the course start date will result in a refund of the course less a 10% administration charge.

Cancellations by applicants received less than 4 weeks before the course start date will result in 50% of the course fee being forfeited or, if available, an alternative date for the course will be offered.

In the event of illness supported by a doctor’s certificate, the centre will refund 90% of the course fee. However, please note that any cancellations on or after the course start date for this reason will result in the full fee being forfeited. All cancellations must be in writing or by e-mail to training@wosc.org.uk.

Once payment has been received the course is only transferable to another person at the discretion of the centre.

2. Saturday Afternoon RYA Training for Adults and Juniors

Open to WOSC members only, aged 8+ years

This training is aimed at those that cannot commit to two consecutive weekends and would like to access training in a more flexible way as and when a student attends. Both adults and juniors of at least 8 years of age can take part.

All children under 16 years of age must have a parent/guardian at WOSC at all times and must sign in all children at each session.

All participants are required to sign in at every session.

Training is free, but contributions to the Martin Gibson Junior Sailing Fund are welcomed.

Course content

Adults will follow the Level 1 and 2 RYA syllabus and juniors the Youth Stage 1, 2 or 3 syllabus, depending on previous sailing experience. Those who already hold these qualifications can still take part in the training sessions.

You can attend as many or as few sessions as you want, but of course the more you attend the faster your progress will be. Each session lasts approximately 3 hours depending on conditions.

Also, if you want to apply for RYA certificates, there is a minimum course duration for each Level of 8 hours of instruction.

Start time is 13:00 and runs on till 16:00 or until the sun stops shining!

The session is led by a Senior Instructor with the required minimum RYA Instructor:participant ratios (see main Sailing School page for details). Adults will usually be in a Wayfarer, Firefly, Hartley or Laser. Children will be taught in Optimist, Topper, Firefly, Hartley, Laser and Wayfarer.

All students that wish to take part in ANY Saturday afternoon session need to book once at the beginning of the season.

This allows us to track progress.

To book, you must first log in then go to events or to the training calendar tab at the top of this page, find the event, click on 'register' and follow the instructions. Note that we must adhere to RYA Instructor:student ratios and safety boat:dinghy ratios so if the course is very busy groups may need to be rotated between boats and 'snack time'.

You will still need to sign in at the start of each session, otherwise your progress will not be logged.

All training will be logged and progress and attendance will be reviewed in September.

Those students who have reached the required standards for RYA Level 1 or 2 or Youth Stage 1, 2 or 3 will be informed by the Training Secretary.

If a student wishes to have a certificate, it can be issued at the cost of £20 administration fee (per level), but students are not obliged to apply for a certificate. As well as a certificate, students will be provided with a log book and 'Start Sailing' book.

3. Junior Sailing Week

Open to WOSC members only, aged 8 to 18 years

This week is designed to accommodate the absolute beginner to those who wish to access club racing. There is a maximum of 44 places available. All young people under 16 must be accompanied by their parent/guardian at all times.

Course content

The RYA Youth Stage 1, 2 and 3 syllabus will be covered, depending on the students' abilities.

The course duration is 15-20 hours depending on conditions. As each level takes 8 hours, all three levels cannot be completed in the week, but skills acquired and hours of training undertaken can be added to those obtained by attendance at Saturday Afternoon RYA Training for Adults and Juniors.

The session is led by a Senior Instructor with the required minimum RYA Instructor:participant ratios (see main Sailing School page for details). Instructors will allocate groups based on previous sailing experience so students will not have to repeat Stages that they have already completed. The course will be conducted in Optimists, Toppers, Fireflys, Lasers, Hartleys and Wayfarers.

The week is free, though donations to the Martin Gibson Junior Sailing Fund are welcomed.

Notifications of the booking procedure will be announced in the What's on at WOSC newsletter and added to the Juniors pages of the website. An e-mail notification will also be sent to all members. Please only apply if your child can attend the entire week.

Those that achieve the requirements for the Youth RYA Stage 1 and 2 or 3 syllabus can have a certificate issued at a cost of £20 (per level), but students are not obliged to apply for a certificate. As well as a certificate, students will be provided with a log book and 'Start Sailing' book.

4. Powerboat Level 2 Course

Open to WOSC members only aged 16+

To facilitate the Patrol Boat cover for club racing a 2-day course resulting in a RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification is offered. This is free to candidates with certificates issued at club cost. Students will be added to the Patrol Boat rota for club duties. You must be 16 years of age for this course. Courses will be advertised and registration will be through the events page.
