WOSC competed in the West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race 17th & 18th September

Seen as the UK's No.1 dinghy endurance race. The 24 Hour Race is the premiere opportunity for Sailing Club teams to compete for serious trophies (and status), whilst also enjoying the unique hospitality provided by one of the best social events in the dinghy racing calendar with live band and disco on Friday night that the WOSC team also excel at!

The race is sailed on the relatively safe waters of the Marine Lake at Southport, and racing is continuous for 24 Hours from Saturday noon through to Sunday noon, even in extreme weather conditions.

This year was especially hard with the sun beating down none stop and temperatures soaring into the mid twenties. Entries are accepted from Sailing Clubs, Class Associations and Universities throughout the UK, with past visits from Eire, France and even the USA. Crew, equipment and sail changes are permitted during the race through the specially designated docking area where we arrange our change overs every two hours so all members got a chance to take part.

The teams are split across two boats our Enterprise and a Firefly. The Firefly consisting mainly of junior sailors and adults of a suitable weight - although John Whiteside has in previous years been seen tucked into the front of the firefly to assist with ballast, 2016 this was definitely not necessary!  The Enterprise team then is made up from any member of the club who fancies joining in. Roger Postbeschild professionally arranges a full schedule for both boats and ensures that everyone gets a stint.  We have a team tent which Roger and Claire provide and for many years manage to ensure we have prime position at the water front. This helps the camaraderie as cheering and jeering from the shore to the boats as they pass is an essential part of the weekend, at the end of a two hour shift is great to hear that you only have 1 more lap!!
